What sets our football academy apart from other football academies

Imagine this—you’re a parent that realises your child has a penchant for playing football. You see that they are a natural at the sport, and their talent is evident. However, you are at a loss on how best to support them, as you may or may not have the experience and expertise required to help. You start to look for football coaches and schools, spending hours researching and comparing, but you can’t seem to make a satisfactory decision. This is where we step in.

At GoalKick Football Academy, we teach football like no other place. We make learning of the sport fun, engaging, comprehensive and convenient for everyone—all that to say that we are a football academy that stands out from the rest. Here are some reasons why our academy is unique.

Fixed timings vs Convenience

Conventionally, other football academies may have set timings and sessions for when they conduct their lessons and training for their learners. This may be in the middle of a weekday, or after a long school or work day where it feels more like a chore to attend training, rather than something to look forward to in your day, as playing football should rightfully be. It may also be hard to find time in your schedule to fit this block of time in, and may put you off from signing up for training entirely.

At our academy, timings are flexible, with training to be set at timings at your own convenience. Since training is highly personalised, you can decide for yourself which time in the day suits you for our coaches to conduct training, as we have available slots running from Monday through Sunday, 7am to 9pm every day. This means that no matter how busy you are, you are able to have the choice of having training at your preferred timing, so that you don’t have to see football as a burden or strain on your schedule.

Location, location, location

Many football academies have their venues in one or two places around Singapore, where all their lessons are conducted. With a fixed location for their academy, many people in Singapore may find it difficult, inconvenient and
time-consuming to travel for their training sessions, as they may live on opposite ends of the island from where their preferred academy is situated. Transportation becomes an issue as well, as some academies may not be easily accessible by MRT or public buses.

Our academy is unique in this aspect. Instead of having a centralised, single location where all training is conducted for everyone, we provide flexibility in the location of the session as well. We are able to conduct training sessions at any venue that is an open space near your house, such as a public park, where there is flat and open space for football to be played. This concept allows you to cut down on the worry of having to reach a far-flung location on time for your training session, as the training from our academy comes to you instead. Our academy’s coach will take care of everything else in terms of equipment.

One size fits all vs tailored training

When you sign up for training with other football academies, you may be assigned into a group class that matches your starting abilities, or at least as close as it can be. This means that as a brand new beginner, you might be lagging behind others in your session from the get-go, while the lessons and guidance carry on at its pace before you join. This may also mean that after a few months, you might have other new beginners joining your class every other week or month, and your progress is hindered as the overall skill level of the class will stagnate.

At our academy, there wouldn’t be any cause for concern in this aspect. During your first lesson, you will be assessed by our coaches to have a full picture of your strengths and weaknesses, allowing them to draw up a specialised, personalised and detailed plan for your training. This means when you engage a coach for yourself, it really means it’s for You. Attention to detail is key in the delivery of training, and you will feel that your progress in your learning journey is never about chasing after your peers, or being dragged down by others, but constant, reliable and steady. Learning this way will be comfortable for all, and a worthwhile experience. Commentary and reviews will also be given after every lesson to provide focus on areas for improvement so that your learning process every training is complete.

Value-added experiences

Besides regular football lessons throughout the year, our academy provides unique experiences for learners that they can choose to partake in if they are interested.

One such activity would be our holiday camp, conducted during the June holidays for those who want to have a kickstart in the football journey, or even those who love playing football already and want to have some fun with friends during the holidays.

As for our other programmes, our academy provides different services such as Football Development Programme, Competitive Football TrainingDirect School Admissions, and Corporate and Team-Building. This means football at our academy is not just for those who are serious and want to go into the competitive realm of the sport, but also about those who love the sport in general, and enjoy it on a leisurely basis, or to use it as an important tool for interpersonal relationship building and bonding. Football should be accessible to all, and there is no intimidation or fear in participating in the sport even if you’re not competitive. Our academy makes the sport something that everyone with different goals and aims can enjoy together for a common love of football.

Our academy is like no other academy in Singapore, with our highly flexible concept, accessibility and personalisation of experiences. This is what sets us apart, and makes us the prime choice for starting your football journey. We hope to see you soon!

How do you find your own football style?

Football, with all its rules, is still a sport that leaves a lot of room for individual expression and diversity in style of play. There are many ways to play football well, and each player brings their own flair to the game, depending on their strengths and weaknesses, their preferences, and their perspective of the game. If you are just starting out, you may still be working on finding and developing your own personal style. Let’s get you started!

Master the basic skills of football
Before experimenting with different playing styles, it is important that you know the basics of playing football well. After all, the fundamentals are the foundation on which you can build your other skills further down the road, and if you’re shaky in the basic aspects, you might struggle to develop properly as a football player. The essential skills in football include dribbling, passing, control, shooting, and positioning.

To practice, you should focus on each aspect individually. Get a partner to work together with you during practice.  As you get more confident in each skill, you can move on and try incorporating them together. A small reminder: don’t neglect to practice these skills with your non-dominant foot as well, as having the ability to play confidently with both sides would be essential in increasing your potential as a player and expanding your limits on the pitch, allowing you to play around more with different styles!

Watch and learn from professional players
The best way to develop your football style is to watch those who have already mastered their own. There are plenty of analysis videos, articles, and commentary online on famous players and their unique playing styles. Players like Messi, Neymar, and Ronaldo have been extensively studied and their playing styles dissected. Watch football games, study their moves, the decisions they make on the pitch, the techniques they use, and how they position themselves on the pitch.
You can then try to replicate and modify what you learn to suit your own personal preferences.

Dare to experiment
After nailing the fundamentals and watching the pros, it’s time for you to get to work developing your own unique style. Try out different positions like winger, striker, and midfielder. Don’t restrict yourself to one role, as you may discover that you actually suit playing a different position and can perform even better than you imagined. Take note
of your confidence level in different positions.

As a team, you can also try out different formations to learn how you interact with each other. This will also help
you have a better perspective of the importance of your positioning on the field and how each player fits into the
larger gameplay. Since every individual player has their own unique style, it is important for the team to figure out how they interact and synchronise to present a united strategy as a team.

Get plenty of feedback
As an individual player on the pitch, you are limited to what your own pair of eyes can see, and this affects your
decision-making during games. You may not be able to get a good big picture of how your teammates are positioned on the field, whether or not you should move to a better spot to receive and give a pass, and so on. It is important to get feedback and information during and after the game from other players as well as the coach, who is able to see the entire game from the sides. Be receptive and proactive in asking for recommendations and tips, and learn how to execute the adjustments in future games. You can even ask somebody to record a video of the game itself so that you can analyse it later and learn from your mistakes.

Have confidence in your abilities
As you are at the beginning of your journey and still learning the ropes, you may have self-limiting beliefs on your abilities as a player. This is natural as you may be receiving more feedback and tips on improvements, as you will be doing more things wrong than right at the start. Don’t be afraid or lose faith, and learn to trust the process. Take criticism as opportunities to learn, but don’t let it define who you are on the field. Believe in your own skills and
instincts and don’t be afraid to try new things. Only when you push outside your comfort zone can you find your own football style and craft it to your liking. By putting in the hard work and being consistent with your efforts, your confidence level will increase as well.

Practice makes perfect
Now that you have learnt what you need to know, all it takes now is to keep practising and practising. With any learnable skill, practising the right form and techniques consistently over time will no doubt improve your mastery and confidence at it. Your football style is always evolving and changing based on your strengths and weaknesses, as you experiment and tweak it over time to make it yours. Practicing regularly and consistently will help build your skills and find what works best for you. After trying these new things, put in the work to mastering them and build yourself up consistently.

Developing your own football style is no easy feat, but it is also highly rewarding at the end of the day. It doesn’t
happen overnight, so remember to keep at it and always adopt a positive growth mindset!
